Case name
Guangzhou Urban Kitchen Garden - Farm Box Project
Project description
Guangdong Lingnan Educational Charity Foundation has been working in the field of food and farming education for many years. In 2017, the foundation developed the Urban Kitchen Garden and Farm Box project together with their partners "One Kilogram Box" and the Edible Landscapes Research Group, and distributed Kitchen Garden Box food and agriculture education toolkits to more than 100 schools in 11 districts in Guangzhou. These kits give schoolchildren access to hands-on agricultural learning experiences and opportunities to get close to nature and also gives families the resources to plant their own vegetable gardens, making simpler and greener lifestyles a daily routine for urban residents.
Project features
Aligns with Ministry of Education recommendations on general labor skill education in schools: The program addresses the challenge of the widening gap between children, the land they live on, and the food they eat. With a series of free activities related to food and farming education in schools, the program draws children away from their digital devices, teaches them to value and respect their food, and reconnects them with agricultural work.
Kitchen Garden Box course toolkit: The toolkit includes teaching materials, seeds, gardening tools, templates, themed activity posters, and a variety of other materials. Designed to engage young children, the curriculum is divided into nine lessons, taking children step-by-step through the journey of a growing plant, allowing them to have a farm-to-table experience, and fostering their connection with nature.
Empowering teachers: The curriculum developers organize regular teacher training and networking activities and advise teachers on the development and maintenance of their school vegetable plots and rooftop gardens.
Project impact
The Guangzhou Urban Kitchen Garden and Farm Box project has conducted food and agricultural education programs in more than 100 schools in Guangzhou, providing food and farming education guidance to over 200 front-line teachers and benefiting more than 2,000 children.
