Meatless Monday Veggie Wednesday
Case name
Promoting flexitarian diets and introducing a vegetarian cafeteria booth using plant-based meat in Tsinghua University High School International
Project description
The Meatless Monday Veggie Wednesday project was launched by a group of 18 Tsinghua University High School International (THSI) students to encourage students in their school and elsewhere to eat plant-based on Mondays and Wednesdays. The program aims to reduce demand for meat so as to reduce the supply of meat. They also helped to initiate a partnership between Sodexo, the school's canteen operator, and Z-rou, a plant-based meat brand, to open a dedicated plant-based cafeteria booth every Wednesday, giving students the chance to try tasty, nutritious, and environmentally friendly vegetarian options.
Project features
This initiative to open a vegetarian cafeteria booth was 100% initiated by THSI students and realized thanks to their passion and efforts. The project demonstrates the youth's enthusiasm for sustainable food systems, excellent problem-solving skills, and strong cooperation and communication with school administration and food company throughout the implementation process. To convince administrators that the project was economically viable, the students researched the costs and benefits and conducted promotional campaigns. The program is a great example of the potential of young people to transform the food system.
